  1. 01

    Sun & Moon

    Begin with two personal lenses.

    What to notice

The Sun and Moon offer symbolic lenses on identity and emotional needs. If the Moon changes signs during your birth date, an unknown time leaves more than one possibility.

  2. 02

    Rising

Add this with a reliable birth time and birthplace.

    Why time matters

The Ascendant describes the zodiac meeting the eastern horizon at birth. A reliable time and location are necessary; an unknown birth time cannot give a precise Rising sign.

Equal signs. Uneven sky.

Tropical signs and astronomical constellations use different frameworks.

Tropical signs

Twelve equal divisions, measured from the March equinox.

Constellations

Uneven regions of the observable sky.

Keep the same zodiac and house system when comparing.

Explore the reference sky

A reference sky, not a local live view. Use the equal and unequal divisions above to compare the two systems.

01Start hereSymbolic reflection, with room for your experience to disagree.

Astrology is a tradition of interpreting celestial positions symbolically. A chart gives that tradition a structure: a moment, a place and a set of relationships between points in the sky. Here, we use it as a prompt for reflection rather than a promise about what will happen.

You do not have to recognise yourself in every description. Keep what helps you ask a more useful question; leave room for experience to disagree. Astrological interpretations are not scientifically established methods of predicting personality or events.

A simple reading might pair Mercury with Taurus and the third house: consider a deliberate communication style in everyday conversation. It is a starting question, not evidence that someone must speak in one particular way.

03Read your chart in layersBegin with two lenses, then add reliable detail.

Begin with your Sun and Moon. Add the Ascendant only when you have a reliable birth time and location. Then explore Mercury, Venus and Mars before trying to connect every symbol at once.

Write down one placement, one interpretation and one example from your actual life. Notice both a match and a counterexample. This keeps the exercise open rather than turning the chart into a fixed identity.

04Choose a tradition, then stay consistentCompare the same zodiac and house system.

These guides use the Western tropical zodiac. Tropical signs divide the ecliptic into twelve equal sections measured from the March equinox; they are not the irregular astronomical constellations. Sidereal systems use a different reference, so a placement can have a different sign without either calculator being broken.

House systems also differ. A chart using Whole Sign houses can place a planet in a different house from a Placidus chart. Compare like with like before comparing interpretations.

05Bring it into your practiceTurn one interpretation into a useful question.

Choose a theme you can act on today: a clearer request, a small creative experiment or a boundary you can explain. If you enjoy tarot, use one card to explore the question a placement raises.

Common questions

Is astrology the same as astronomy?

Astronomy studies celestial objects and physical processes. Astrology assigns symbolic meanings to celestial configurations. Astronomical calculations can locate a planet precisely without validating its astrological interpretation.

Do I need my birth time to begin?

You can begin learning with a date. An exact time improves planetary positions and is necessary, with location, to determine an Ascendant and houses. If your Moon changes signs that day, an unknown time leaves more than one possibility.

Where should I start?

Read the Sun, Moon & Rising guide, then use the birth chart snapshot. Return to signs and planets as you encounter them. There is no need to memorise all twelve houses first.
